When things don’t go the way we hope

April 22, 2008 | faith, family

Random thoughts from SuzieMy mom is sick. We received the call last Thursday and I rushed to the hospital.

When I walked into Emergency, she was on a gurney with an oxygen mask on her face. My brother and sister were in the room with her.

“Has anybody prayed yet?” I asked.

My mom lifted her hand and I held it close and prayed.

She didn’t leap out of bed. But something did happen. I felt it as I held my mother’s hand in mine. She felt comforted.

And so did I.

That’s one aspect of faith that emerges in the tough times, and is there when life is taking a turn and you aren’t sure where you are going, like riding a wave into the unknown.

As the week progressed, she battled double pneumonia and renal issues. She was tired and sometimes overwhelmed, and sometimes hyped on steroids that had her nervous system on point. I slept on a hard bed/cot thing listening as nurses and aides came in every hour or two to take blood, beat on her back to loosen the brick in her lungs, take vitals, and to place the mask over her face for another breathing treatment.

That next morning I woke up pale, rings under my eyes, my hair standing at attention like a wild-eyed woman. Mom looked rested. She said she had a “magical night”.

Ah, the beauty of sleepy meds.

Last night we talked for two hours. She will be released later tonight.

What is the point of this blog today? I’m just glad my mom is better and I’m thankful that she, and I, have Someone to turn to for strength and grace when things don’t go the way we hope.

Thanks for tuning in, my bloggy friends. I appreciate you.

PS: I’ll be taping the Harvest show this next month. If that is in your area and you would like me to come speak to your writing, rehab, mother’s, jail ministry, church or group, contact me with details.
